We are privileged to have the team at the Nimbus Research Centre open their doors and showcase the centre to CEIA member organisations.
The Nimbus Research Centre is at the forefront of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and Internet of Things (IoT) research, innovation and learning.
It’s 30+ staff deliver 70+ research projects to industry annually. It provides an R&D service underpinned by research expertise in User Experience Design, Data Science, Hardware and Software Development. www.nimbusgateway.ie. It is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27.
We will be presented with a MTU Research Centre Overview and details on Industry Engagement, Research, Teaching & Learning. During the Nimbus Research Centre Tour, the following activities and projects will be showcased:

Dr Seán McSweeney – Dean of the Faculty of Engineering
Dr Seán McSweeney has been with MTU and previously Cork Institute of Technology since 2014. He is currently the university coordinator for the INGENIUM European University Alliance and was previously the Head of the Department of Computer Science from 2020 to 2023. He holds a PhD and BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from UCC, and MEngSc in Mechanical and Process Engineering also from UCC. His research interests include Cyber Security and the Internet of Things. Dr McSweeney brings a strong track record of engaging with industry and is a board member of the Technology Industry Alliance. Seán has been a member of the MTU Academic Council and Executive Academic Council since 2016
Brian Cahill – Nimbus Gateway Centre Manager
Brian is a significantly experienced researcher, programme and project manager with a depth of expertise in the Irish and European research funding landscape and the development and successful delivery of a broad range of diverse projects.
He has 25+ years’ experience in electronic engineering, software development and project management, working in commercial software development with national and multi-national companies, such as Acer and Motorola with emphasis on Telecommunications research and development. Brian’s research interests include wireless systems design, Building Information Model (BIM), Databases, Building Performance and Software Engineering. He has published approx. 17 publications
Dr. Susan Rea, Director of the Nimbus Research Centre, MTU
Susan leads a team investigating trusted and distributed infrastructure management, digital transformation, and design led technology development. Academic Advisory Body member International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (INATBA), Board member European Technology Platform Software, Services and Data (NESSI). She is the cybersecurity co-lead as part of the ENTIRE European Digital Innovation Hub, focused on accelerating the digital transformation of organisations active in the digitalisation of Life Sciences/Healthtech, Agriculture, Energy and Transport sectors, advancing the exploration, exploitation, and investment by Irish SMEs and public authorities in the utilisation of intelligent secure IoT sensors, networks, and software.
Dr. Alan McGibney, Research Director, Nimbus Centre, MTU
Alan leads a multi-disciplinary team at the Nimbus centre focused on topics including Internet of Things and Cyber Physical System applications. He leads a number of collaborative EU and national research projects delivering secure digital systems for energy efficient, and circular manufacturing, IoT cybersecurity and collaborative data spaces. His areas of expertise include distributed software architectures, trust management, edge and fog computing, Distributed Ledger Technology and Blockchain.
