Quantum Computing has the potential to transform and disrupt major industries with its promise of exponential speed up. While still in a phase of transitioning into commercial readiness, the time for companies to take action is now in preparation. This talk with outline current state of play in quantum computing technologies along with an overview of the major verticals that may be affected
We are honoured to have Jason Lynch, CEO, Equal1 in conjunction with Dr Sean McSweeney, Dean of Faculty of Engineering MTU, address us on this very significant and interesting topic.
Jason Lynch, CEO Equal1
Equal1 is on a mission to democratise quantum computing, making this transformative technology accessible and affordable for all. They believe scalable quantum computing can solve complex problems far beyond the reach of classical computers, revolutionising industries and addressing fundamental challenges like climate change. Their founding thesis is simple: silicon has driven every major advancement in classical computing and believe it will do the same for quantum.
Equal 1 as a capital-efficient startup, has leveraged trillions invested in semiconductor technology to develop scalable, cost-effective silicon spin qubits. In just six years, they have produced successful test chips, patented unique IP, and achieved world-leading qubit performance, all on standard foundry processes.
Equal1’s world-class team, spanning Ireland, US, Canada, Romania, and the Netherlands, combines quantum expertise with a proven track record of commercialising successful silicon products. They are bringing quantum computing out of the lab and into the hands of those who can unlock its tremendous potential.
Jason received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and M.S. in Microelectronic Engineering from the National University of Ireland, Cork in 1999 and 2005. He has also earned a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), Summa Cum Laude, from the Franklin W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College, Massachusetts, USA in 2009. He was previously a General Manager with Analog Devices, Managing Director at Hittite Microwave International Limited and began his career with Farran Technology, in Cork.
Dr. Sean McSweeney, Dean of Faculty of Engineering
Sean and his team from MTU with present on: The Quantum Road Ahead: The MTU Academic Perspective
Munster Technological University (MTU) is actively contributing to Ireland’s quantum technology goals through targeted research and education initiatives. By building on strengths in Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and leveraging established centres like Nimbus and TEC Gateway, MTU supports regional and national quantum objectives.
The recent launch of Ireland’s first cloud-based quantum computing platform, “QCloud,” aims to expand collaboration and skill development among researchers nationwide. The South-West region’s existing expertise in software, semiconductors, photonics, and cybersecurity provides a valuable foundation, yet specialized quantum skills are still developing.
This briefing aims to explore specific skills and training initiatives needed to effectively support quantum innovation in the region.
The Business Briefing is hosted in Nimbus Research Centre, MTU and we wish to thank Brian Cahill – Gateway Centre Manager and his team for supporting this wonderful event.
In addition, we wish to express our thanks to Jason and Sean, who are taking the time from their very busy schedules to talk with us.
Notes:
Parking is a premium in the MTU carparks, arrive early to avail of one, the MTU Park & Ride Service* and the CETB carpark are alternatives
* The MTU Park & Ride service uses Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium, T12HNP4 (aka the Dog Track).
Timetable: Opening hours: 7:30am, 8am – 10am (leaves every 15 mins): *10am – 4pm (Bus will leave MTU every 15 minutes past and 15 minutes to the hour from MTU. (Subject to traffic conditions)
Bus stops are:
Car Park & Ride: Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium, T12HNP4. The majority of the carpark is now MTU designated spaces.
The bus pick-up point is the front of the stadium.
MTU Bus Stop: On-campus Rossa Avenue side of the MTU Library. Five minutes walk to the Nimbus Research Centre.
